Roadway TM has taken another significant step forward with incorporating technology and bringing innovations into traffic management, successfully deploying HRS’ Intellicone IPAWS technology across multiple night-time full carriageway closures in the Midlands.
The system was implemented on schemes at Darlington Street, Wolverhampton and Moseley, Birmingham, supporting surfacing and associated works where the safety of site teams and the travelling public was paramount.
These live deployments form part of Roadway TM’s wider strategy to embrace intelligent traffic management solutions that strengthen roadworker protection and deter incursions across both high and low-speed environments.
Bringing Digital Innovation into the Local Authority Environment
Roadway TM is committed to introducing systems such as Intellicone IPAWS into the local authority sector, demonstrating the tangible safety and operational benefits they provide.
IPAWS creates electronically alarmed closure points capable of instantly warning the workforce in the event of a forced entry. Operatives can trigger a 96dB audible alarm and visual alert, deterring motorists from breaching quarantined sites while providing immediate notification to crews working within the closure.
This early warning capability gives teams valuable time to retreat to a designated place of safety, significantly reducing the risk of serious injury. The system can also reduce the need for fully manned closure points, removing operatives from potentially confrontational situations whilst still maintaining control of the situation.
Both sites were overseen by Area Manager Jamie Reardon, who has been instrumental in driving innovation across Roadway’s Midlands operations.
Jamie said:
“The Intellicone IPAWS system has transformed how we manage risk on both high- and low-speed closures. With motorists often attempting to force their way through quarantined sites, having instant notification of an incursion gives our clients the warning they need to remove themselves from danger.
“TOur continued work with HRS to further enhance the system is focused on giving teams even greater situational awareness – because that early warning time can genuinely save lives.”
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
HRS attended both sites to guide Roadway TM teams through the live setup and operation of the system, ensuring the technology was fully understood and embedded within site procedures.
Allan Stowe of HRS commented:
“HRS are proud to support work-zone safety and improve operational control within the West Midlands. Roadway UK TM have demonstrated the system’s strong performance across a variety of urban street-works environments, with IPAWS providing alarmed closure points, reducing the need for manned positions, and improving overall operational benefits within this low speed, high-demand region – one where dense traffic and varied infrastructure require adaptable solutions.”
Roadway TM Director Mark Bentley added:
“Investing in digital safety systems like IPAWS reflects our commitment to continual improvement.
“We embrace innovation, but we do so with the belief that innovation must have a clear purpose, and for us that purpose is protecting people.
“By integrating intelligent technology into our closures, we are strengthening our risk management approach and setting higher standards for traffic management delivery.”
A Safer Future
The successful deployment of Intellicone IPAWS in Wolverhampton and Birmingham marks another milestone in Roadway’s journey to modernise traffic management operations to keep people safe.
By combining experienced leadership under Jamie Reardon with innovative technology, Roadway continues to demonstrate that innovation and safety go hand in hand – ensuring that every scheme is delivered with the highest possible level of protection for its people.
